“The more I see of men, the more I admire dogs.”
Mme. de Sevigne (1626 - 1692)
As a mural artist, and a specialist in trompe l’oeil, I am concerned
with creating an illusion of reality, the focus being on appearance
and surface.
In my recent work, I have produced representations of dogs in back
streets and alleyways, creating, if only for a split second, the illusion
that these are real waifs and strays.
My work with DAWG (Dorset Animal Workers Group) has made me aware
of the neglect and abuse of dogs, and I seek to examine and question
our relationship with dogs in an urban environment.
The issues raised in exploring our attitudes towards animals traditionally
regarded as our best friends are also valid in relation to our treatment
of other human beings.
The plight of dogs turns a mirror on ourselves and makes us question
our assumption that ours is a caring, humane society, and even that,
as a species, we are superior to other animals.
In fact, very little has changed since Mme. de Sevigne made her judgment
about mankind three hundred years ago.
